How I Study: Tips and Tricks to Help You Ace Your Test
Hey guys! Welcome back to my blog. For today's post, I wanted to talk about studying. As many of you know, I am a junior in college so I've had my fair share of studying. I've tried all different methods and have figured out what works and doesn't work for me. I hope you enjoy and don't forget to follow my blog so you never miss a new post.
1. Take notes before class (if possible)
A lot of times in college professors will post their notes online or allow you to print their powerpoint slides beforehand. I would definitely take advantage of this because it allows you to spend more time listening to your professor rather than mindlessly copying down slides of notes. I personally like to have the professor's powerpoint on my laptop and add notes in the notes section of each individual slide. After class, I go back and copy and paste the information on the slides as well as any additional notes I added and mark any topics or keywords that seem important. Here is an example of my notes from one of my classes. Here I bolded any vocabulary words and wrote down any further explanations. I also was sure to write down some examples mentioned in class and any important charts from the slides.
2. Review and re-write notes
Like I mentioned before, reviewing your notes after class is a good idea. I usually go back and bold any vocab words or important topics discussed. I reorganize my notes if needed and often I will handwrite my notes in a notebook to help with the memorization and learning process. I like to use colorful pens and highlighter to help me remember important keywords or concepts.
3. Use Quizlet and StudyBlue for online flashcards
I highly recommend using either one of these websites to make some online flashcards. I know a lot of people use Quizlet and I agree that is the best for studying. I like how you can star certain terms and study them by themselves. Also the learn feature is great for studying because it forces you to keep having the terms you miss over and over until you get them right. However, the one downside of Quizlet is that you cannot upload your own photos with their free account. So that's why I also recommend Study Blue. You can upload images to flashcards to help you learn a concept better. A lot of my classes use images or charts so this site is good for studying those concepts. Study Blue also allows you to star terms and test yourself. Here is an example of one of my Quizlet sets and as well my Study Blue set.
4. Utilize exam reviews and study guides for more focused studying
I am so appreciative when professors give study guides for exams especially when it is a lot of material. I will go through my notes and highlight the keywords or topics mentioned in the study guide and really focus on those as well as anything I thought was important.
5. Study old quizzes or homework
If your professor gives quizzes or homework, use them to study for the test. Often times those questions will be similar to the test and allows you to know what kinds of questions might be asked. I like to add any quiz or homework questions to my study guides because it is probably something you should know.
